How to Choose the Right Filming Location for a Commercial

The right filming location for a commercial is rarely the most beautiful one on paper. It is the one that works within your timeline, your budget, your permit window, and the creative brief. In France, where every region comes with its own regulations, seasonal constraints, and crew availability, this decision carries real production weight. Getting it wrong costs time and budget. Getting it right defines the entire campaign.

Iconic locations such as the Eiffel Tower require particularly early coordination for film shoots.

Start With Timing, Not Aesthetics

Before scouting a single frame, the first question is always: when do you need to shoot? In France, timing directly determines which locations are viable. Paris filming permits now require a minimum lead time of 15 working days (3 weeks) for all arrondissements, with certain high-density zones Paris Centre, the 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th arrondissements requiring significantly earlier engagement for anything involving road access or parking. Iconic locations tied to major landmarks require the earliest coordination of all.

The South of France operates differently. The Côte d'Azur and Provence benefit from over 300 days of sunshine per year, but the most experienced production crews on the ground consistently recommend shooting between September and May to avoid peak tourist season. During July and August, locations are crowded, accommodation rates spike, and permit processing times for popular sites can lengthen. A spring window April to June typically delivers exceptional natural light, manageable crowds, and competitive crew rates.

Budget Determines More Than You Think

Location choice is a budget decision as much as a creative one. Filming in Paris involves direct costs that are easy to underestimate: parking authorisation fees in central arrondissements, mandatory insurance cover, and in some cases generator compliance charges since from January 2025, traditional diesel generators are restricted in Paris and battery-powered or biofuel alternatives are now required for most shoots. For multi-vehicle productions in high-stress arrondissements, permit fees alone can reach several hundred euros per day.

Outside Paris, the cost equation shifts. Regions such as Provence, the Var, or the Languedoc offer striking landscapes at lower operational overhead smaller permit costs, more accessible locations, and shorter logistical chains. For brands working with mid-range production budgets, southern France often delivers a higher visual return than the capital.

The Decision Framework Agencies Actually Use

Production-savvy agencies use a three-axis filter when choosing a filming location for a commercial in France: creative fit (does the location serve the brief?), operational viability (can we secure it within the timeline and budget?), and contingency (what is the back-up if weather, access, or permitting creates a problem?). A location that scores well on all three is the right choice even if it was not the first creative instinct.

This framework also applies to regional comparisons. Paris offers unrivalled architectural authority and global brand recognition. The South of France offers natural light, versatility, and a wider range of estate and landscape formats. The French Alps deliver drama and scale. Each has a different risk and cost profile, and the right choice depends on the specific brief not a general preference.

Local Expertise Is the Key to Choosing the Right Filming Location for a Commercial

No location decision is complete without factoring in who will execute it. In France, permit systems are municipal Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Nice, and Cannes all operate through distinct film offices, each with its own timelines, requirements, and local expectations. A local production company with established relationships across these systems does not just save time. It unlocks access to locations that are technically available but practically difficult without local knowledge.
